When Is The Best Time to Visit Bhutan?

Bhutan is a land of soaring Himalayan peaks, ancient monasteries and vibrant cultural festivals…a magical destination like no other. But when is the best time to visit this hidden kingdom?

At YellowWood Adventures, we carefully select our travel dates to align with the best seasons for trekking, cultural experiences and unforgettable scenery. Whether you’re hiking the legendary Trans Bhutan Trail, discovering the country’s hidden valleys, or witnessing the Tshechu festivals, here’s everything you need to know about the best time to visit Bhutan.

Understanding Bhutan’s Seasons

Winter (December – February): Crisp, Clear & Quiet

Winter in Bhutan is cold but beautiful, especially in the valleys. Daytime temperatures range from 5–15°C (41–59°F), but nights can drop below freezing, especially in the higher altitudes. If you’re looking for fewer crowds, December is an excellent time to explore Bhutan’s cultural sites, such as Paro, Punakha, and Thimphu, where the crisp air and clear skies make for spectacular views. However, some high-altitude trekking routes may be inaccessible due to snow.

Best for: Cultural exploration, monastery visits, photography.

Spring (March – May): A Trekkers’ Paradise

Spring is one of the best times to visit Bhutan—the landscapes come alive with rhododendron blooms, lush valleys, and perfect trekking weather. The days are warm, with temperatures ranging from 10–25°C (50–77°F), making it ideal for hiking the Trans Bhutan Trail or exploring the untouched landscapes of our Hidden Kingdom itinerary.

April and May are particularly stunning, as the forests burst into colour and the weather is warm but not too humid.

Best for: Trekking, nature lovers, photography, cultural tours.

Summer (June–August): The Monsoon Season

Summer is the least popular time to visit Bhutan due to the heavy monsoon rains. While the valleys remain lush and green, the rainfall can make trekking trails slippery, and some roads become impassable.

Best for: Those looking for a quiet, off-season visit with lush landscapes.

Autumn (September – November): Festivals & Perfect Weather

Autumn is arguably the best time to visit Bhutan. The skies are crystal clear, temperatures are perfect for trekking (10–22°C / 50–72°F), and Bhutan’s most vibrant festivals take place.

September and October are ideal for those wanting to trek the Trans Bhutan Trail or explore Bhutan’s remote landscapes on our Hidden Kingdom adventure.

For those drawn to Bhutan’s rich traditions, October is particularly special - the Thimphu Tshechu and Gangtey Tshechu Festivals take place from 2nd–10th October, offering a mesmerising display of masked dances, sacred rituals, and local celebrations.

Best for: Trekking, festivals, cultural experiences, stunning photography.
