Ethiopia has an astounding number of endemic species that are very easily accessible to view including the Ethiopian Red Wolf, Ghelada Baboon, Walia Ibex and Mountain Nyala to name but a few. The birdlife makes the country a bird-watchers paradise.

A rich history

Ethiopia boasts a 3,000-year-old archeological history, the pinnacle of which being ‘Lucy’ – the oldest and most complete hominid skeleton ever found. Evidence of its more modern history abounds around every corner, with a total of no less than ten UNESCO World Heritage sites, which is the most of any African country.

Some of the most incredible churches in the world

With some of the churches dating back to the 12th Century, the eleven underground churches in Lalibela, carved directly out of the living rock, have been dubbed ‘The 8th Wonder of the World’. You can also climb up into churches carved directly into the Tigray mountainsides.

Diversity of cultures

Ethiopia is a melting pot of different cultures, religions and ethnicities, with 83 indigenous languages. Moving between regions this difference is palpable, making any trip to the country rewarding in its variety of experience.

The food

Ethiopian cuisine is also one of the world’s best-kept secrets. Meat lovers will quickly become addicted to tibs; freshly roasted meat mopped up with the injera flatbread and spices. For those who prefer vegetarian options, bayaynet offers a huge array of different freshly cooked vegetable dishes, curds and pates, all served together on a platter of injera, not to mention the freshly fried fish on the shores of Lake Awasa.

Lively festivals

With about 60% of Ethiopia Orthodox Christian, their lavish celebrations span the entire country with parades the like of which you cannot imagine. Wherever possible we will coincide trip dates with the major festivals.
