Self-guided trek. Trails are well-marked and easy to follow.
This is the only hike in the area that climbs above the valleys rather than following them, offering some of the most impressive panoramic views around El Chaltén.
The trail starts at the Ceferino Fonzo Visitor Centre of Los Glaciares National Park. A gate marks the beginning, where the path splits: to the left are the trails to the Los Cóndores and Las Águilas viewpoints, and to the right are the trails to Pliegue Tumbado and Laguna Toro / Paso del Viento.
The trail climbs steadily, gaining around 1100 metres in elevation, reaching a viewpoint at approximately 1500 metres above sea level. As the trail is exposed and tree-free at higher altitudes, it is important to be prepared with a windproof jacket and warm layers. Snowfall can occur even in summer.
About an hour into the walk, the trail crosses the Pampa de las Carretas, a plateau with views of Huemul Hill to the south, Lake Viedma, and the Andes range including Cerro Torre and Cerro Chaltén.
The trail then enters a forest, continuing up to around 1000 metres above sea level, where the landscape shifts to low shrubs and rocky terrain. In this area, you may spot marine fossils that date back over 100 million years.
The final stretch of the trail is less defined but marked with yellow poles, leading to the top of Pliegue Tumbado. This section may be snow-covered, and in such conditions, it is not recommended to continue.
Please note: although this viewpoint is generally accessible during the recommended season, trail conditions can vary depending on snow. Always check with the Los Glaciares National Park Visitor Centre for up-to-date information before setting out.

Self-guided treks. Trails are well marked and easy to follow.
The most sought-after trek with the most spectacular views of El Chaltén (the Fitz Roy massif). This natural viewpoint is the closest site to the imposing walls of El Chaltén (the Fitz Roy massif), and its surrounding granite spires make it without a doubt the most famous of all the walks.
· Jurisdiction: Los Glaciares National Park
· Duration: 5 hours (one way)
· Difficulty: Medium
· Slope: 700 metres from El Chaltén
· Accessible: Normally from October to May
The trail begins at the end of Avenida San Martín, where the urban area of El Chaltén ends. Parking is available here.
During the first hour of the walk, the slope is fairly steep, until the trail enters the valley of the Del Salto stream towards El Chaltén (the Fitz Roy massif). Ñire trees become increasingly common along the path. After approximately an hour and a half, you will reach a well-marked natural rocky viewpoint, with a sign that helps interpret the mountainous and glacial landscape in front of you. The path continues along the Del Salto stream to the drainage area of the Madre y Hija lagoons.
About four hours after leaving El Chaltén, you will reach Poincenot Base Camp (one of the busiest camping areas in the National Park), and after crossing the Blanco River, Río Blanco Base Camp (only for climbers). From here, the trail climbs steeply for around 400 metres to Laguna de los Tres, taking over an hour and requiring effort.
The trail ends at the old moraine ridge — a large arc-shaped formation now holding the lagoon, created by past glacial movement — with an extraordinary view of the lagoon and the Glacier de los Tres.
This is the closest view of the granite wall of El Chaltén (the Fitz Roy massif) and its surrounding spires. Descending from the moraine, you can follow a trail around the lagoon to its outlet, where you’ll also see the remote Laguna Sucia and its hanging glaciers.
Note: Although access to this viewpoint is possible during the dates mentioned, it always depends on snow conditions along the trail, especially the final section. We recommend checking trail conditions at the Los Glaciares National Park Visitor Centre, located just before entering the village.

Self-guided treks. Trails are well marked and easy to follow.
If you still have energy and would like to do another self-guided trek, depart early in the morning for one of the classic walks of El Chaltén that leads to the Adela range and the remarkable Cerro Torre. The De Agostini base camp is located here. Just reaching the viewpoint, two hours from El Chaltén, offers the chance to witness one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in the world, featuring one of Patagonia’s most iconic peaks: Cerro Torre.
· Jurisdiction: Los Glaciares National Park
· Duration: 4 hours (one way)
· Approximate total time: 9 hours (round trip)
· Difficulty: Moderate
· Slope: 200 metres from El Chaltén
· Accessible: Normally from October to May
From El Chaltén, there are two trailheads to Torre lagoon. Both trails join within five minutes of the start. The trail enters the valley of the Fitz Roy River and follows the river upstream towards its source. Just 15 minutes from the start, there is a viewpoint in a gorge along the Fitz Roy River, offering panoramic views of Solo hills, Adela cordon, Torre hill, and Mount Fitz Roy. On the opposite bank of the river is the Margarita waterfall.
Halfway along the trail, you’ll reach a natural viewpoint with an impressive panorama of the Adela range, Torre Hill and its surrounding granite spires. The trail then continues through De Agostini base camp, where it is possible to stay overnight. Fifteen minutes beyond the camp, the path ends at Torre lagoon which often has icebergs on its shore that have calved from the front of the Grande Glacier.
Note: Although access to this viewpoint is generally possible during the mentioned months, it is always subject to snow accumulation on the trail, particularly near the end. We recommend checking trail conditions at the Los Glaciares National Park Visitor Centre, located just before entering the village.

Torres del Paine National Park in 4x4 - Shared service. Local guide included:
A full-day excursion the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, considered one of the eight natural wonders of the world. Located in the heart of Southern Patagonia, 300 km south of El Calafate, this park is recognised as one of the most beautiful on the planet due to its unique and fascinating geography, which includes imposing mountains, glaciers, crystal-clear lakes, waterfalls, and a rich array of native flora and fauna.
We will traverse the vast Patagonian steppe from north to south, reaching the Cancha Carrera border crossing (approximately 3.5 hours), from where we will begin our journey into southern Chile, entering Torres del Paine National Park. The park’s name comes from the indigenous Tehuelche language and refers to the predominant blue color of its landscapes.
From the Cerro Castillo border, we will head towards Laguna Amarga, where we can appreciate the iconic view of the Torres del Paine. We will continue by vehicle, making stops at viewpoints like Laguna de los Cisnes and the Mirador Superior of Nordenskjold, until we reach Puerto Pudeto, the starting point of the trail to Salto Grande. If the weather allows, we will take a walk along the shore of Lake Pehoe to the lower viewpoint of the Cuernos del Paine. This easy walk, requiring minimal physical effort and with low technical difficulty, will be led by a trekking guide certified by CONAF Chile.
After the walk we will continue by vehicle to a new viewpoint near Lake Pehoe, where we will enjoy one of the most iconic views of the park, with the Cuernos del Paine and the French Valley in the background, framed by the Pehoe and Nordenskjold lakes.
Finally, we will begin the return journey to El Calafate, arriving at the hotel around 10:00 PM. It is important to note that the order of the stops may vary according to the guide’s instructions or park authorities’ restrictions, and the itinerary may be modified or shortened depending on weather conditions and border-crossing times. San Pablo Cape and Rolito Ranch – Shared service with English-speaking guide:
Every land has its own secrets, but not everyone is chosen to know them. A lighthouse on a lonely cape, a mysterious sunken ship stranded for 40 years, and a distinguished antique estancia are some of the icons that reveal the unknown stories of Tierra del Fuego.
Very early in the morning, we leave Ushuaia, following National Route 3 and crossing the Andes through the Garibaldi Pass. We stop by the little town of Tolhuin, the heart of the island, to visit La Unión Bakery. This is a traditional meeting point for both locals and visitors, and it is part of the charm of this village. By midday, we come to Provincial Route “A”, where we take a gravel road heading toward the Atlantic Ocean and San Pablo Cape. At this point, we hike up an isolated mountain to reach an abandoned lighthouse at the end.
Climbing to the top of this beacon, you can appreciate The Desdemona, an abandoned ship from almost 40 years ago that invites us to sail through time. It happened on a cold winter morning in 1983, when this enormous craft ran aground on the shores of the Argentine Sea.
After exploring this mysterious giant, we visit Estancia Rolito. This lovely ranch, which keeps the spirit of a family business based on sheep farming tradition, is the first ranch to open its gates to rural tourism.

Carbon Compensation is not the perfect solution, and it is important to first reduce our carbon emissions as much as we can, yet trees remain an excellent natural technology to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to slow global warming.
For every client and guide who attends a YellowWood Adventure, we donate £30 to our partner charity WeForest to plant 15 trees to (over) compensate for the carbon footprint of the tour.
We also invite our clients to match this with an optional additional £30 for another 15 trees to be planted to help compensate for the carbon footprint of their international flights.
WeForest run many tree planting and tree maintenance projects such as this seedling nursery in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil and many other projects in other countries including Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania & India.

On arrival at the hotel, you should head to reception where they can show you to your room.
We fully believe in, and practice Responsible Tourism, using hotels run by locals. We put time and effort into building our relationship with them to ensure you have a a great trip.
We choose hotels based on cleanliness, comfort, safety, proximity to our route (to avoid unnecessary extra travel), and a warm client welcome, as well as reliability in their service to us. Some hotels will be basic, and in modern buildings and or in towns. Wherever we can, we will choose smaller more characterful, individual hotels, but in areas where tourism is still developing, this may not be available. An aspect of our adventures is to escape the ‘trappings’ of modern Western lifestyles and to experience new things which is exciting and memorable, and reflects the countries we are visiting. This is adventure travel and on occasion the advertised services at a hotel (eg wifi, or hot showers!) may not be functional on our arrival. This tends to occur in the smaller, more remote hotels. Very rarely a hotel lets us down and we are required to find alternative suitable accommodation that might not be our first choice.
The list below gives information on our first choice of accommodation for this adventure. Where hotels and refuges are fully booked or unavailable, we will use an alternative of a similar standard, and equally well situated. We will provide you with an accurate list of accommodation, with contact information to leave with relatives, prior to departure on your adventure.
