If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring Morocco beyond the cities, this 9-day journey into the south is the perfect adventure. From the bustling medina of Marrakech, with its aromatic spice stalls, shisha smoke curling through the alleyways, and the call of the muezzin echoing from ornately carved minarets, you travel south into landscapes that feel timeless.
Rising into the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll wind along dramatic passes and through terraced Berber villages, where earth-built houses cling to the mountainsides and the scent of the land - dust, pine, and distant snow - fills the air. Descending into the palm-lined Draa Valley, your path follows Morocco’s longest river past crumbling kasbahs, oasis gardens, and sleepy towns that seem unchanged by time.
Beyond Zagora and Mhamid El Ghizlane, the desert unfolds in waves of golden sand. Here, camel caravans carry your supplies as you trek across small dunes and dry riverbeds, camping beneath an endless starry sky. Erg Zahar and the towering Erg Chigaga dunes invite exploration and adventure, offering unrivalled sunsets and 360-degree views of a wild, remote landscape.
This journey blends rugged scenery, cultural encounters with local families, and the comfort of carefully chosen guesthouses and desert camps, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in Morocco’s untamed south.
(Available as a small group tour or a tailor-made holiday)
To learn more about hiking the High Atlas Mountains, you can read our Journal post here.
You will be staying at the dramatically located and absolutely stunning Kasbah du Toubkal, an award-winning lodge constructed in the Berber style. Nestled in the mountains at 1800m altitude with incredible views all around, it is one of those remote magical places where friendships are formed.
You'll gain a real understanding of how the traditional ways of life can be appreciated, and the dreamlike qualities of Morocco fill your days with tranquillity.

Leaving the Marrakech plain in the morning, we travel south and begin our ascent into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The drive takes us over the spectacular Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest main road pass in Morocco, winding through lush valleys and past traditional earth-built villages. There will be time to stop along the way to enjoy the views, with your driver choosing the best viewpoints and comfort breaks.
After crossing the pass, there is the option to continue south via the scenic Ounila Valley to reach Ouarzazate today, or to save this route for the return journey. Those remaining on the main road descend via the quicker route to Ouarzazate.
From Ouarzazate, the journey continues south across the outer reaches of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, with wide-ranging views eastwards over the palm-lined Draa Valley. We descend to join the river near Agdz, where we spend the night just outside town in a palm oasis, staying in an earth-constructed guesthouse.

After breakfast, we set out on a guided exploratory walk through the palm oasis surrounding Agdz, set beneath the dramatic flanks of the Jebel Kissane mountain. Along the way, your guide introduces you to the traditional subsistence farming methods used among the palm groves and explains how the Draa River - the lifeblood of this region - has been affected by the upstream dam.
The walk lasts approximately two hours, allowing time to absorb the tranquillity and scenery of the oasis. Continuing downstream, we reach the Ksar of Tamnougalt, where we take in the views and enjoy lunch in a local family home. The ksar remains very much inhabited and offers a wonderful example of the adobe architecture typical of the Draa Valley.
After lunch, we return by road to the guesthouse, where the remainder of the afternoon is free to relax.

After breakfast, we continue south through the Draa Valley and Zagora, travelling to the end of the sealed road at the frontier village of Mhamid El Ghizlane. The Draa is Morocco’s longest river, and the journey is lined with palm oases and crumbling kasbahs that reflect the region’s long history. While drought in recent years has affected many oases, particularly further south, numerous palms continue to thrive, sustained by deep wells and traditional irrigation channels.
Shortly after arriving in Mhamid, we leave the road behind and drive off-road for approximately 40 minutes to meet our desert guides and camel caravan, resting under the shade of broad tamarisk trees. A hearty lunch is served before the camels are loaded and we set out on an afternoon hike, heading south-west into the desert.
Before sunset, we establish our camp in a secluded area among small dunes and desert trees. The camels carry all supplies and equipment, and our guides select the ideal location for the first of our two mobile wilderness camps. As evening falls, a fire is lit and we settle in to enjoy the vast night sky and its unfolding celestial display.

After breakfast, camp is struck and we begin our trek towards the day’s destination: the vast and remote sand dune region of Erg Zahar, reached after approximately four hours. Today’s terrain is mostly flat and plateau-like, crossing what was once a dried lake bed, before gradually giving way to rolling sand dunes. Compared to the previous day, vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as we move deeper into the desert.
Our second wilderness camp is set up beyond the base of the towering Erg Zahar dunes, nestled among smaller dunes. Lunch is served on arrival, followed by time to rest and relax.
In the late afternoon, we explore the Erg Zahar dunes, climbing to the highest point before sunset to take in the changing light and sweeping views across the ‘erg’ or sand sea. From this vantage point, enjoy expansive 360-degree views of the dunes and the mountain reliefs to the south. As daylight fades, we hike back to camp and settle in for a well-earned evening meal.

After breakfast, camp is once again struck and we head north, crossing the vast, dry expanse of the Draa River course. Flanked by tamarisk trees and other deep-rooted shrubs, this area supports a surprising variety of birdlife, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. The morning’s terrain is varied, with scattered trees and shrubs, undulating earth plateaux, and dry wadis. After approximately three hours, we stop for lunch beneath the shade of trees in the Hadibad region.
Here, we bid farewell to our camel caravan and support team, while our desert guide continues with us for the remainder of our stay at the Erg Chigaga dunes.
Following lunch, we transfer by 4WD vehicle for approximately 90 minutes, arriving at the Erg Chigaga dunes in time to enjoy the sunset. We settle into our fixed desert camp, which will be our base for tonight and the following night, and enjoy the welcome comfort of a hot shower and a real bed. The evening is rounded off with music around the fireside.

After breakfast, our guide leads a hike northwards out of the dune field, passing through areas of desert scrub and low-lying dunes. This terrain offers excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, including the elusive Dorcas gazelle and a variety of bird species that thrive in the desert environment.
After approximately two hours, we stop for a picnic lunch beneath the shade of trees, taking time to appreciate the diverse landscapes around us. Following lunch, we return to camp by 4WD vehicle (approximately 30 minutes).
The afternoon is spent at leisure at camp. In the evening, there is the option to hike or take a camel trek to the tallest dune in the 40km-long Erg Chigaga, where we can enjoy an unforgettable sunset. We then hike or camel trek back across the dunes as the stars begin to appear.
Our final night is spent in the heart of the desert, enjoying warm Sahrawi hospitality, with evening music around the fireside.

After breakfast, we depart our fixed camp at Erg Chigaga and begin our journey out of the desert, travelling in the opposite direction to our arrival. The route takes us north-west by 4WD across the desert for approximately three hours, passing through some of Morocco’s most remote and striking scenery. Highlights include the vast dried salt flats of Lake Iriqui and the dramatic mountain ridges of the Jebel Bani, part of the Anti-Atlas range.
Reaching the frontier town of Foum Zguid, we continue onward through Tazenakht, a town renowned for its traditional rug weaving. From here, we drive across the outer reaches of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, with views of Jebel Sirwa visible in the distance to the west.
Our journey then brings us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, set within the scenic Ounila Valley. Depending on our arrival time and group preference, there is the option to photograph the ksar from a viewpoint or to explore it on foot. We spend the night either near Ait Ben Haddou in a kasbah-style guesthouse, or closer to Ouarzazate in a hotel.
Accommodation: Either near Ait Ben Haddou in a kasbah-style guesthouse, or closer to Ouarzazate in a hotel.

After breakfast, we drive back across the High Atlas Mountains, following the scenic, single-track Ounila Valley and passing the ruined Telouet Kasbah—or, if you chose the Ounila Valley on Day 2, via the main road over the Tichka Pass. Shortly after Telouet village, we re-cross the High Atlas at the Tichka Pass and descend toward the Marrakech plain.
We expect to arrive in Marrakech by mid-afternoon, where you will be dropped off at either the airport or your accommodation in the medina.
Single rooms are available on a first come, first served basis, however, due to the nature of the accommodation we are using on this adventure, there are some nights where single rooms are not possible, so the supplement price reflects this (it varies depending on the season, so please check with us if you are not sure). We will charge on a pro-rata basis if a single room is not available to book for part of the trip where it would have been possible.
Carbon Compensation is not the perfect solution, and it is important to first reduce our carbon emissions as much as we can, yet trees remain an excellent natural technology to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to slow global warming.
For every client and guide who attends a YellowWood Adventure, we donate £30 to our partner charity WeForest to plant 15 trees to (over) compensate for the carbon footprint of the tour.
We also invite our clients to match this with an optional additional £30 for another 15 trees to be planted to help compensate for the carbon footprint of their international flights.
WeForest run many tree planting and tree maintenance projects such as this seedling nursery in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil and many other projects in other countries including Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania & India.

We fully believe in, and practice Responsible Tourism, using local hotels, owned and run by locals. We put time and effort into building our relationship with them to ensure you have a a great trip.
We choose hotels based on cleanliness, comfort, safety, proximity to our route (to avoid unnecessary extra road travel), and a warm client welcome, as well as reliability in their service to us. Some hotels will be basic, in modern buildings or in town centres. Wherever we can, we will choose smaller more characterful, individual hotels, but in areas where tourism is still developing, this may not be available. An aspect of our adventures is to escape the ‘trappings’ of modern Western lifestyles and to experience new things which are exciting and memorable, and reflects the countries we are visiting.
This is adventure travel and on occasion the advertised services at a hotel (eg wifi, or hot showers, or continuous power) may not be functional on our arrival. This tends to occur in the smaller, more remote hotels. Very rarely a hotel lets us down and we are required to find alternative suitable accommodation that might not be our first choice. This trip involves hotels, a wilderness lodge and camping.
The list below gives information on our first choice of accommodation for this adventure; where hotels and hostels are fully booked or unavailable, we will use an alternative of a similar standard, and equally well situated. The Kasbah du Toubkal is guaranteed, as is the Trekking Lodge in the Azzaden Valley. We will provide you with an accurate list of accommodation, with contact information to leave with relatives, prior to departure on your adventure.
Marrakech (Day 1): 3* Riad style accomodation with single, double & twin rooms available.
Kasbah du Toubkal (Day 2-4, 6 & 8): Premier Mountain Retreat full of character, charm and certainly the WOW factor. Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, en-suite, though en-suite dormitory style 'Berber Salons' are available also, for 3 or 4 people to share, with a £150 discount each off the price of the holiday if that is desired. The Kasbah offers full board, with water included at all meals. Alcohol is not served, but you are welcome to bring your own with you, to be consumed on the premises. 4G phone signal, and Wi-fi available in communal areas.
Trekking Lodge, Azzaden Valley (Day 5): The Trekking Lodge in Azzaden Valley is a traditional Berber style property, reached on foot. If offers comfortable dormitory style ensuite rooms with 3 twin rooms and a triple room, plus another twin room not ensuite. No single rooms are available. Meals are fully catered for.
Berber Village Homestay (Day 7):
Toubkal Refuge (Day 5): There are 2 refuge options at Base Camp and where we stay will depend on availability. Both offer dormitory style accommodation with shared bathroom facilities
Unless you have booked a single room (where they are available) and paid the single room supplement for those nights, you will be sharing a twin room with another client (of the same gender). In the Azzaden Trekking lodge you may be in a triple room, or may have bathroom facilities that are not en-suite. In the Toubkal Refuge you will be staying in dormitory accommodation with shared bathroom facilities.
Supporting you on your holiday will be an experienced member of the YellowWood Guiding team. They will be joined by a local city guide in Marrakech, and an experienced English speaking walking guide will join the team for the duration of the trek.
This ensures you the perfect balance of information and support on your trip; your Moroccan guides offer insight into local life and customs, as well as routes during hiking, whilst your YellowWood guide ensures the smooth running of your adventure.
Your group will be any number from our minimum group size of 6 up to a maximum of 12 clients. This number works really well with the ratio of guides, and ensures the optimum level of service to you during your adventure.
We get clients booking alone, as couples and in small groups of friends. If you have a group of friends or family who are interested in having their own customised trip, then please let us know and we can cost it for you.
You are visiting the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco and will be walking at altitude and over some rough terrain and taking on steep ascents and descents. For the walking in the Imlil and Azzaden Valley, as well as to/from the Berber village, the routes can be chosen to meet the needs and aspirations of the group, but we have pitched this top as an Intermediate Hiking Grade WITHOUT the summit attempt of Jebel Toubkal. The hiking is at the natural pace of the group, with regular stops. You will be carrying just a day pack and your water bottle. We highly recommend a filtration water bottle such as Aquapure Traveller.
To get the most of out of this adventure, you need to be a regular walker and in good physical condition so that you can enjoy consecutive days of hiking. You do not need to be experienced in trekking, however.
For those choosing the optional summit trek of Jebel Toubkal (4167m) during our summer departures, the activity Grade of this adventure increases from a 5 to a 6/7. We recommend that you have experience of hiking or have prepared for the adventure to get the most out of the summit attempt, which includes walking on scree slopes, and steep sections. You will be sleeping above 3000m at the Jebel Toubkal base camp and altitude sickness is a possibility: please see our section on Health.
As with all active holidays, the fitter you are the more you can relax and enjoy the stunning route, and the better you can cope with challenges such as the outside elements. Clients are advised to get in as much regular walking/ short runs before the trip as is convenient.
NB: If you have bought new hiking boots for this adventure, training is the right time to wear them in, not on the trip itself!
Your YellowWood adventure starts at the airport in Marrakech on the start day of the trip. We understand that arriving into an unfamiliar airport can be very daunting, so we aim to give you as much information here as possible to help you prepare.
Flights are not included in the cost of your holiday, and whilst we are happy to help advise you, responsibility for booking the correct flights rests with you. We recommend that you use a comparison tool such as www.momondo.co.uk or www.skyscanner.net when searching for flights. We will send you a Flight Information Sheet with further pointers on which flights to book for your adventure.
For the latest travel advice from the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office including security and local laws, plus passport and visa information, check www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice. As the situation in our destination countries can change, please do ensure you check regularly before your adventure. We also receive notifications direct from the FCDO so we are always aware of the ‘status’ in our destination countries.

Holiday insurance is essential for all Yellow Wood Adventures. Unfortunately anyone without insurance is not able to take part in the holiday, so please make sure you arrange cover. We recommend sorting your insurance when you book so that if you have problems during the run up to your holiday, and need to cancel, you are covered, particularly in the light of effects that the pandemic has had on travel.
Prior to the holiday, we will ask you to send us details of your insurer, policy number, 24 hr emergency assistance contact details and the name, address, and telephone numbers of your NOK or persons to be notified in the event of an emergency.
Your insurance needs to cover you for hiking /trekking with the following fairly standard inclusions:
We would also recommend that you have cover for the following optional items:

Morroco experience
Highly recommend doing the YellowWood Moroccan adventure. Seamless transitions from the City to the atlas mountains. From the moment of meeting our driver at the airport for transportation to our Riadwe felt well care for. Flexibility in booking extra days to explore the city. Custom hike with an experienced guide. We had some weather issues (thunderstorms out of season) and had to rejig our hiking schedule. The Kasbah staff and our guide took care of everything without issue. Wonderful food, people and scenery. The Toubkal trek is challenging but seeing sunrise in the mountains is worth it. We are a couple in our late 50's in good physical shape. We enjoy poking around new places and soaking up the atmosphere. If you like getting off the beaten path and travelling to see and do something different I would highly recommend YellowWood Adventures.

Wonderful Custom Morocco Adventure
I was a lucky last minute addition to a private trip to Morocco planned by a friend with YellowWood Adventures. Sam and Katia rallied with grace and good humor to book rooms and activities for me to match the goup's planned itinerary just one week before departure. The trip was a perfect mix of culture with stops in Casablanca, Volubilis, Chefchouaen, Fes and Marrakech followed by a wonderful week hiking in the High Atlas mountains based at the delightful Kasbah du Toubkal and its trekking lodge in the Azzedine Valley. Our guides for the "city" portion and the trekking were knowledgeable, interesting, entertaining and thoughtful in giving us a tailored experience of their fascinating country. Sam and Katia communicated promptly and with good humor to our questions and requests for itinerary tweaks and changes. I had always wanted to visit Morocco. YellowWood helped design a wonderful trip that I will always remember. I will definitely plan another trip with YellowWood Adventures. I highly recommend them.

Fantastic trip! We made quite a few changes to our itinerary, some last minute that involved number of people traveling. Katia and Sam were timely in their responses and extremely accommodating.
We appreciated the detail and thought that went into our itinerary. A perfect combination of cultural immersion and outdoor activities. The guides were fun to hang out with, very knowledgeable and great humans.
Can't wait to plan another trip with YellowWood!

Toukbal - Morocco - in June was a small family group trek, plus Sam from YellowWood. The local experience in the Atlas was excellent, top class local guiding and very comfortable Kasbah accommodation softening the two mountain refuges.
Balance was just right for all of us - ages ranging from 36 to 70. Trekking was topped and tailed between a day's acclimatisation in Marrakech and a chance to revisit the Souks on the way out. A great trip - thank you, YellowWood & Sam.

Sam (Yellow Wood MD) organized and led a tour for two others and I to climb Toubkal in Morocco. It was a superb trip and I highly recommend YellowWood. Each step was perfectly arranged. Sam was present throughout and always involved but not overbearing. Felt safe, well organized and a super adventure.
