The UNESCO-protected Danube Delta on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea is the second largest wildlife biosphere in Europe, and home to over 320 species of birds and a huge variety of fish & plants. It remains beautifully wild and undisturbed, allowing nature to thrive here.
The Delta is a wildlife-lovers paradise, and for those with an interest in photography it is a hidden gem: Home to pelicans, storks, cormorants, terns, and a host of migrating birds from the boreal forests and tundras from the north. Unsurprisingly, you will also find the largest number of fish species anywhere in Europe. Sustainable and carefully managed tourism are key to support the local communities of this region, who in turn promote re-wilding and protection of the area.

3 star hotel
As members of your group fly home after your main Romanian Adventure, you can feel quietly smug as you continue your travels to deepen your understanding of Romania. Your English speaking local guide will meet you after breakfast at your hotel and transfer you (2.5hrs) to the attractive coastal city of Constanta, on the Black Sea. It is one of the oldest documented cities in Romania, with a mix of Greek, Roman, Ottoman & American cultural influences. You can enjoy lunch and a walking tour of the city before continuing to Tulcea (2hrs), a city laid out over 7 hills, lying at the divide of the Danube. We stay here this evening, with the chance to explore the city and harbour

Tulcea is the entry point to the Delta itself, which stretches for nearly 3500km within Romania. Today is all about the wildlife of the area and we want a full day on the Delta. Leaving at 8am, and returning at around 7pm, we take a boat trip (max group size is 12) on a small boat that is able to navigate the narrower canals as we head for 3hrs, further into the Delta itself. The boat tour is guided by an English speaking wildlife expert who can take you to the best spots to view the magnificent and varied birdlife on the shores of the Delta. There is the option of eating at a traditional fisherman restaurant for 15€pp (not included). We return to Tulcea at dusk.

Today we visit the striking and mystical 14th Century Enisala Fortress in the arid landscape of Dobrogea en route back to Bucharest and Otopeni Airport for your flight home. If you would like to spend longer in the Delta, or would like to spend longer in Bucharest before flying home, then please discuss your plans with us and we can support you with this.
Single rooms are available on a first come, first served basis. We will charge on a pro-rata basis if a single room is only available for part of the trip.
We always choose accommodation based on cleanliness, comfort, safety, proximity to our route (to avoid unnecessary travel) and a warm client welcome as well as reliability in their service to us. We can only offer single rooms on a first come, first served basis. Single rooms will be available for a supplement of £65pp.
We fully believe in, and practice, Responsible Tourism and are using hotels run by locals. We put time and effort into building our relationship with accommodation suppliers to ensure you have a great trip.
Extra nights
If you need an extra night in Bucharest before or after your adventure, then please select this option when you book the adventure (online booking). You will be able to book a twin/double room (for 2 people) or a single room (for 1 person).
Supporting you on your holiday will be a local, English speaking Romanian guide, plus you will join a larger group under the care of a wildlife guide for your birdwatching boat tour.
We work closely with our Romanian Tour Operator partners both before and during your adventure to ensure that they understand your needs and the standard that YellowWood Adventures expects.
We believe that it is a very important positive aspect of Responsible Tourism, to employ the expertise of local suppliers, as well as offering you a much more informative and authentic experience.
As this is an optional ‘Add On’ to your main Romanian Adventure, it may be just a group of 2, or may be more, up to the maximum group number of 12.
We get clients booking alone, as couples and in small groups of friends. If you have a group of friends or family who are interested in having their own customised trip, then please let us know and we can cost it for you.
The focus of this holiday is a cultural and slow wildlife exploration. Any walking is at the natural pace of the group, with regular stops. This Danube Delta Add on will not be as energetic as your main Romanian Adventure.

Please read our Adventure Itinerary & Essential Information for more information and don't hesitate to contact us if you would like to chat through whether you have found a suitable adventure for you.
You need to be in good physical health to enjoy your active holiday, but you don’t need to be an experienced hiker. These itineraries offer a mix of sightseeing and easier walking for around 2-4hrs a day, with the emphasis on sights and cultural experiences.
Walks will be well marked or on defined pathways, and often around sites of interest. The expected amount of descent/ascent will depend on the landscapes of the destination, but will not exceed 400m/day, and will often be much less. Walks are at low altitude (below 3000m).
You will not be required to carry more than a day sack with water and essentials. Ensure you are aware of the weather conditions likely in the destination you are visiting and have a pair of comfortable and worn in walking shoes/boots.
You need to have a good level of fitness and be a regular walker for these adventures, with ideally some trekking experience. You can expect to be walking for 3-6 hours per day, not including rest stops, normally on good trail paths but with some uneven surfaces at times.
